Overview of the Larger Project
• The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) and the risk-reduction NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) mission will provide environmental data that are processed from Raw Data Records (RDRs) into Sensor Data Records (SDRs) and Environmental Data Records (EDRs). The SDRs and EDRs are typically time constrained products that are generated in real-time or near real-time in support of operational weather forecasts. SDRs and EDRs lack the long-term repeatability required for climate studies. The RDRs are composed of packaged, compressed data that was designed for data transmission, not data access.
• Climate Data Records (CDRs) are fully calibrated time series having the consistency and continuity required for climate research. The production of CDRs requires the reprocessing of extensive data sets as algorithms are improved and sensor performance is understood. Reprocessing continues to refine the CDRs as scientific and technical knowledge grows. Reprocessing CDRs requires the raw data measurements from the sensor for initiating each iteration of reprocessing.
• The goal of the Raw Climate Data Record (R-CDR) Project is to provide an efficient, verified, and quality controlled product, Raw CDR, for utilization in climate research and the generation of CDRs. The Raw CDR consists of raw data that is quality controlled, assembled into discrete data sets, with earth location and calibration information appended. The raw CDRs will be disseminated to climate researchers for the generation of CDRs. Raw CDRs will be produced for Visible/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) – Nadir.
Responsibilities
• Senior level on the team with PhD or MS credentials PLUS 10 years of programming in the Scientific space, National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) and the risk-reduction NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) mission
• Will be working on-site in Ashville NC
• Responsible for understanding calibration and geolocation processing for the Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS). OMPS is a sensor flying on the NPOESS
• Responsible for software development to preprocess raw OMPS data for use in the processing of Climate Data Records
• Contribute to the development of scientific goals, instrument requirements, and validation approaches for various missions
